The introduction of genetically modified seeds into the environment has been increasingly controversial, as illustrated by the ongoing debates concerning the commercialisation of Bt cotton in an increasing number of states in India over the past few years. In other countries too, in particular in the European region, the development of agricultural genetic engineering and the commercialisation of transgenic food products has been met with significant resistance.
