About the Discussion
There are two routes that Indian entrepreneurs have traditionally employed to raise capital for starting or expanding their business. The first is community networks and the second is through public offering of equity. The last 15 years or so has, however, witnessed a new phenomenon of promoters accessing equity capital without going public. The funding in this case has come from venture capitalists and private equity investors. This has resulted in a major reshaping of India's corporate landscape, which today has many companies commanding $1 billion-plus valuations while remaining unlisted. In this event, we will hear from one of the keenest observers of Indian business, Neelkanth Mishra, as he discusses Credit Suisse's new report, 100 Unicorns: India's Changing Corporate Landscape. Using the report as a starting point, this event will discuss the kind of companies and ‘new’ entrepreneurs that are riding on this VC/PE-backed boom, even as there is a parallel phenomenon of capital destruction and withering away of firms from the ‘old’ corporate landscape. This will build on themes that CPR had brought out in its October 2020 Seminar issue on state-capital relations.
