[If there is an issue, please email us at climate.initiative.cpr@gmail.com] This webinar is the sixth in the India Energy Transition Dialogues – a series convened by the Centre for Policy Research to explore different paths to meet India’s 21st century energy goals. Each webinar in this bi-weekly series will discuss different pathways proposed by think tanks and research groups working on specific pieces of India’s energy transition puzzle. These discussions – by drawing on practical experiences and exploring the costs and opportunities associated with these approaches – seek to facilitate constructive engagement with government policies and interventions at the national and state levels. In this session, we will discuss the emerging needs and opportunities for advanced power system planning in a high renewable energy scenario. Emergence of cost-effective clean energy, energy storage technologies, electrification, and increasing opportunities for demand-side management in the last two decades have led to increasing complexity in long term planning. Both demand and supply are becoming more variable and subject to increasing uncertainty. In the meantime, India is on a path to meet increasing targets for renewable energy deployment and electrification. These trends will require a different perspective towards long term planning to account for the uncertainties and capabilities of new technologies as well as changing power system needs. This webinar will focus on the work done by NREL on these emerging needs and present a roadmap for advanced power system planning in India that will help Indian stakeholders in planning for higher shares of renewables in the system. ...
