Democracy, Federalism and the Future of India's Unity
This book is based on the premise that democracy, secularism and federalism constitute the main underpinnings of the Indian system. Within this framework, the authors have focussed on the manner in which two of these concepts, democracy and federalism, have developed and impacted the polity. Their central argument is that, while the idea of democracy has taken firm root and indeed grown into a study sapling, federalism is a late starter and is only now beginning to come into its own. Specific suggestions have been put forward to consciously strengthen the federal idea which is seen as a precondition for both national unity and effective political management of the nation.
