About the Talk

Urban South Asia, from the perspective of neighbourhood and neighbourliness, presents a curious challenge to the intellectual orthodoxy as well as the contemporary preoccupations with the neighbourhood as a unit of planning and studies. The affective socio-spatial and sensorial experiences of non-metropolitan, small and intermediate cities, hint at neighbourhoods as a key to exploring the textures of urban life. In such an approach there are vivid linkages between urban lived spaces and social life; memory, migration, and exile; and the city and its society through practices of everyday life in neighbourhoods. The urban, thus, is an array of sensuous experiences in their regional specificities and in a broader context of the Global South. This is so, in spite of the ifs and buts of urbanism.
