National Curriculum Framework for Teacher Education

National Council for Teacher Education

2009

With the vision to change teacher education institutions to become active centres of research and experiments in improving curriculum and teaching methodology, the framework lays down the curriculum areas (pedagogy, foundation and internships) for the proposed process-based curriculum. The Framework focuses on a learner-centred approach that draws upon theories of child development, is engaging with the students’ curriculum and ends with an internship (12-20 weeks) to practice these skills. It recommends that the existing models of teacher education at all levels of school education should be gradually replaced by models of teacher education that integrate general education with professional development along with an intensive internship with schools and proposed (a) D.Ed.: Two-Year Diploma after +2; (b) B.Ed.: One-Year Degree after graduation. It supports continuous professional development programmes for teachers through short/long terms courses, linking in and pre-service education and strengthening the education of teacher educators.
