The Centre for Policy Research invites you to a discussion on: Building a Climate-Ready Indian State: Institutions for Transformative Low-Carbon Governance

India approaches an important new phase in our engagement with global climate change. As India’s economy grows, our development pathway assumes great significance domestically and globally. The decisions India makes in the coming years will define how successfully we are able to bring together development and low carbon futures, and our potential to signal leadership on this issue globally. To make these decisions evidence-based and consistent with both our long-term climate and development goals, India will need a robust institutional structure – at central and state levels — capable of addressing key climate governance challenges such as strategy-setting, coordination and consensus building.

This discussion is intended to kick-start a conversation around building a Climate-Ready Indian State, informed by two recent policy briefs by CPR proposing a plan for revitalizing climate governance at the national and federal (in press) level. The briefs are informed by an academic paper on the evolution of Indian climate institutions, recently published in the journal Environmental Politics.
