About the Discussion:

The title of this panel discussion is inspired by A. N. Das’ classic book “The Republic of Bihar” published in 1992. The 2020 Bihar election is being touted as an inflection point in the electoral history of the state and is set to produce a changed political order with a new vocabulary. The current moment is a good opportunity to look closer into Bihar’s political history, to assess the present moment, and gather cues about the future trajectory of party politics in the state.

The discussants of the panel will draw upon their own work on Bihar to talk about important themes emerging from the current electoral contest – the culmination of the socialist era and a new generation of leaders – that will impact politics in ‘the Republic of Bihar’.

The event is held in partnership with the Rosa Luxemberg Stiftung (RLS).
