About this Roundtable
Rising demand for space-cooling from the use of appliances like ceiling fans, air-coolers, and air-conditioners has the potential of putting significant strain on India’s power system and increasing greenhouse gas emissions. The challenge is to manage this demand in a sustainable manner. In this virtual two-day event, six researchers will present different aspects related to this challenge.
The presentations on the first day will explore social and behavioral patterns related to space cooling in Indian households, and their impacts on the electricity demand. The presentations on the second day will focus on the effectiveness of different policies and programmes aimed at managing the rise in cooling demand. A detailed agenda is available here.
The Centre for Policy Research, Prayas (Energy Group), and the Oxford India Centre for Sustainable Development at the University of Oxford have been holding annual roundtable discussions on India’s residential electricity consumption for the last two years. These discussions aim to provide a forum for researchers and practitioners working on residential electricity demand to substantively share recently completed and on-going work as well as discuss challenges and future directions. This year, given the current pandemic situation, we have decided to hold this event online.
