About the Talk

Recent and ongoing developments in India-US relations show simultaneous friendship and feud, bonhomie and turmoil between the two countries. The Houston rally addressed by Prime Minister Modi and President Trump was a show of their bonding, but that did nothing to resolve serious differences in trade and India’s ties with Russia. There is growing unease in different quarters in the US about India’s new Kashmir policy. President Trump also wants to keep Pakistan close to him. The current phase of bilateral ties is defined by hyper-nationalism in both countries.

About the Speaker

Varghese K George is author of Open Embrace – India-US ties in the age of Modi and Trump. He is Deputy Resident Editor of The Hindu in Delhi and was earlier US correspondent of The Hindu from 2015 to 2018. Prior to that, he was political editor of The Hindu, Chief of Bureau of The Hindustan Times, and Senior Editor at The Indian Express. Varghese has an MA in Modern Indian history from Delhi University and an M Phil in International Relations from Jawaharlal Nehru University. He has been a journalist since 2003.
