Evidence based interrogation of proposals to amend the law of land acquisition in India

This talk will examine the proposal to amend the Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Act, 2013, and describe the manner in which publicly accessible information and that obtained under the Right to Information Act, was used to interrogate the government’s claims and justifications for amending the 2013 Land Acquisition Act. A brief reference to Fifth Schedule areas in the context of land acquisition will also be made.

Mr Venkatesh Nayak is Programme Coordinator, Access to Information Programme at the Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative based in New Delhi. Over the last 15 years, he has worked towards promoting greater transparency in the functioning of public authorities so as to ensure accountability in governance in India and other countries in Asia and Africa. He is also Co-Convenor of the National Campaign for People’s Right to Information.

This is the fourth in a series of talks organised by the Land Rights Initiative  to showcase perspectives on land rights issues by diverse stakeholders, including academics from various disciplinary backgrounds, civil society organisations, grassroots activists, and policymakers. The goal of these talks is to generate multidimensional and multi stakeholder knowledge on these issues.
