Management of municipal solid waste is one of the most pressing challenges faced by Indian cities. If the current situation continues unabated, 10 years from now Indian cities and towns will contribute 50 per cent more waste to these sites than they do today. These challenges range from household practices to unprotected handling of the waste and how the waste is finally treated and disposed. In a wide ranging discussion, the seminar would touch upon how policy and rules have evolved to address the following challenges in waste management:
- Technical issues and planning capability
- Institutional capacity and need for capacity building
- Municipal solid waste management (MSWM) Manual – The intention of the Government to provide assistance
- Political difficulties in implementation
Rémi de Bercegol is a researcher at the Centre for Social Sciences and Humanities (CSH) in New Delhi and a member of the research unit LATTS (Laboratoire Techniques, Territoires, Sociétés – École Nationale des Ponts et Chaussées – Université Paris-Est). His research focuses on world urbanisation and the transformation of cities in the Global South, analysed principally how essential services like water, sanitation, waste management and energy is met.

CORP Seminar Series
This is the 5th in a series of the Community of Research and Practice (CORP) seminar planned by the Scaling City Institution for India: Sanitation (SCI-FI: Sanitation) initiative. This seminar series aims to provide a platform for discussing the experiences of the researchers and practitioners on urban sanitation. Through these discussions, the sanitation initiative intends to build a stronger evidence base for developing policies, programmes and implementation of plans for achieving sanitized cities.
