About the event
Modern democracies are unimaginable without the political parties as they serve as the nerve centre linking citizens and the State in three critical domains—as channels of voicing individual grievances, vehicles of political ambitions, and platforms for interest groups to forge political settlements. As India celebrates 75 years of independence, the Politics Initiative at the Centre for Policy (CPR) has been deeply engaged in understanding India’s political parties and party system changes. The new developments in India’s political system indicate that the country’s political parties are undergoing rapid transition and there are visible changes in at least four key areas: generational transition, social base, ideological positioning, and changes in organizational set up and campaign strategies.
This panel will reflect on the Politics Initiative’s latest report that analyses the factors determining the emergence, survival and success of political parties in India. Furthermore, the report presents the scholarly evaluation of mainstream political parties on facets of ideological platforms, organizational strength, policy positions on major socio-economic issues, campaign strategy, candidate selection to name a few.
