About the presentation:
Industries located in urban areas have significant regional development impact through industrial linkages defined as: `Channels of development impulses’ transmission from an industrial center to the surrounding region.’ Backward and forward industrial linkages are expected to stipulate a self-supporting process of regional growth. Rural-urban interdependence also includes spatial flows of commodities, goods and services, people, information and financial flows. `Synergy between agricultural production and urban-based enterprises is often key to the development of more vibrant local economies and, on a wider level, to less unequal and more “pro-poor” regional economic growth.’

This panel discussion explores how industries, particularly sugar mills and other agro-processing industries, located in a small town act as an important agent of rural transformation based on evidence from Dhampur, located in the rich agricultural region of Western Uttar Pradesh, both through backward and forward industrial linkages as well as through direct interventions by industries to support rural-agricultural development.
