Sanjay Kathuria was a Senior Visiting Fellow at CPR. He is also a Non-Resident Senior Fellow at the Institute of South Asian Studies in the National University of Singapore; Adjunct Professor, Georgetown University; and Visiting Faculty, Ashoka University. Earlier, he was a Lead Economist at the World Bank in Washington DC.
Professor Kathuria is one of the leading thinkers and commentators on economic integration in South Asia and the economic development of the region. For 27 years at the World Bank, he worked in South Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean, and Eastern Europe, including field assignments in New Delhi and Dhaka. Before joining the World Bank, he was a Fellow at the Indian Council for Research on International Economic Relations in New Delhi from 1982 to 1992.
Professor Kathuria’s most recent books include the following World Bank publications: Unleashing E-Commerce for South Asian Integration, 2020 (co-author); Strengthening Cross-Border Value Chains: Opportunities for India and Bangladesh, 2020 (co-editor and author); Playing to Strengths: A Policy Framework for Mainstreaming Northeast India, 2020 (co-editor and author); A Glass Half Full: The Promise of Regional Trade in South Asia, 2018 (editor and co-author) and Towards new Sources of Competitiveness in Bangladesh: A Bangladesh Diagnostic Trade Integration Study, 2016 (co-author). He has written extensively on issues relating to economic growth and development, technological change, trade and globalisation, regional integration and the economics of small states, among others. He writes regular opinion pieces for different media outlets, including The Indian Express, The Hindustan Times, and Business Standard. He is also on the editorial board of the journal, Rising Asia.
He holds a PhD in Economics from Oxford University as an Inlaks Scholar. He graduated from St. Stephen’s College, Delhi, and completed his Masters at the Delhi School of Economics.
