Learning Outcomes at the Elementary Stage

National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT)

2017

The document lays down the learning outcomes for each class in Languages (English, Hindi, Urdu), Mathematics, Environmental Studies, Science and Social Science up to the Elementary stage. With the intention to lay down the learning levels, the document is meant for all stakeholders especially the parents/guardians, teachers, School Management Committee (SMC) and community members to understand the nature of the subject and the curricular expectations, which are the long-term goals that students need to acquire over a period of time, and are therefore spelt out stage-wise. As per the document, unlike previous Minimum Learning Levels (MLLs), there is a shift in approach, i.e., recognising the child’s capacity to construct knowledge as a natural learner as central to the transaction of the curriculum, and the teacher’s role was primarily as a facilitator of the learning process.
