The report explores the implementation of Activity Based Learning (ABL) in Tamil Nadu around the areas of improvement in classroom practices, support systems around ABL and the non-academic outcomes of ABL. The report finds that ABL was not implemented fully as intended. Teachers expressed a positive perception toward ABL’s training material and curriculum but follow-up activities were weaker. The report also finds that the 70% achievement rate among children was not necessarily due to the ABL program. Highlighting the strengths of the program the report states that non-academic attributes of students improved like greater self-confidence, better teacher-student relations, a greater focus on child-centred education. The prominent limitation of the program was that it lead to an increase in the workload of the teachers. The report recommends strengthening the overall training of teachers and other communities, improving in the provision of supplementary learning materials and bolstering the child-friendly aspects of ABL.
