This is the first discussion as part of a series on the upcoming state elections in 2022.
Lawlessness and crime have always been salient electoral issues in Uttar Pradesh politics. Increasing number of anti-crime legislations over the past five years and rhetoric by the state government seems to have brought a marked shift in the way the UP police is dealing with law and order situations. Some commentators have argued that these activities have also led to an increase in state violence. The panel will dissect the idea of Law and Order as imagined and exercised in Uttar Pradesh from various perspectives, and link it to the changing ideas of policing, crime, and power.

Founded in 1973, CPR is one of India’s leading think tanks, providing rigorous policy research on a variety of issues. Founded in 2015, TCPD is among India’s most well-respected institutions working with political data, providing data-driven research, policy work and journalism on India’s political life by producing and disseminating in open access scientifically collected and treated political data. The CPR-TCPD Dialogues leverages the unique strengths of these two institutions to provide rigorous and innovative commentary on India’s social and political challenges.
The event is held in partnership with Rosa Luxemburg Stiftung (RLS), a German-based foundation working in South Asia and other parts of the world on the subjects of critical social analysis and civic education. It promotes a sovereign, socialist, secular, and democratic social order, and aims at present members of society and decision-makers with alternative approaches to such an order. Research organisations, groups working for self-emancipation, and social activists are supported in their initiatives to develop models that have the potential to deliver social and economic justice.
