About the Discussion
The 2026 Assembly elections have produced emphatic verdicts, but their real significance lies in what they reveal about the direction of Indian politics. Across West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Assam, and the Union Territory of Puducherry, voters have delivered outcomes that appear decisive. Yet, beneath these mandates lie deeper shifts in the nature of political competition. At the same time, these elections have unfolded amid debates over electoral processes, and they are likely to continue in the months to come.

Though somewhat anticipated in others, the sweeping verdicts in two states — West Bengal and Tamil Nadu — were unprecedented to say the least. The Politics Initiative brings together a panel of experts to unpack these outcomes and examine what these results tell us about the future of India’s party system and the trajectory of its democracy.
