Unpacking political narratives around air pollution in India

The roundtable will explore the current narratives on the air pollution crisis in India, with Members of Parliament from across the country and political affiliations. While the judicial and (more recently) executive branches have played significant roles in making policies on air pollution, the legislature has largely remained absent so far. Taking off from CPR’s new working paper analysing the unprecedented parliamentary discussions on air quality in November 2019, the MPs will reflect on the emergent narratives on the crisis, significant developments in the last two years, and the path ahead. Representing a new generation of political leaders who will have to grapple with the complex environmental challenges facing the Indian State, the MPs will deliberate on the role the Parliament has to play in the decade(s) to come.

The CPR Initiative on Climate, Energy and Environment aims to stimulate an informed debate on the laws, policies and institutions shaping climate, energy and environmental governance in India. Our research focuses on improved understanding of climate, development and environmental challenges and pathways to improved outcomes, in four key areas: climate policy and institutions, the political economy of electricity in India, low-carbon energy demand patterns in urban areas, and air quality governance.
