The Centre for Policy Research (CPR) and Centre de Sciences Humaines (CSH) invite you to a workshop on:
Governing Urban Commons: Placemaking Projects as Pathways to the Future
Speaker:
Anant Maringanti, Founder Director, Hyderabad Urban Lab
Tuesday, 24th September 2024, 3:45 PM IST onwards. The event will be held online over Zoom.
About the Talk
This talk explores governance of urban commons through placemaking as a crucial pathway to sustainable and inclusive urban futures, offering rich avenues for research and innovation in practice for architects and planners. The speaker will reflect on the I’Local placemaking initiative at Hyderabad Urban Lab, through three key lenses:
1) Placemaking as a practice of returning land to the people as shared commons.
2) Incremental development as a return to John Turner’s valorisation of autoconstruction, incrementalism and autonomy particularly focusing on neighborhood development and service provisioning.
3) Infusing new value into local spaces by making them accessible to diverse stakeholders and allowing them to invent new uses and values.
These lenses not only frame new approaches to urban governance but also highlight the potential for architects and planners to drive innovation and community engagement in the Global South, with particular relevance to cities like Hyderabad.
