About the speaker:
Prof. S. D. Muni is an Emeritus Professor at Jawaharlal Nehru University’s (JNU) School of International Studies. He has lectured and directed research at JNU, National University of Singapore; Banaras Hindu University; and Rajasthan University, Jaipur. Prof. Muni is an eminent scholar on India, South Asia as well as South East Asia. In a career spanning more than a half century, his scholarship informed and enlightened scores of scholars and diplomats.

He served as India’s Special Envoy for Southeast Asian Countries for UN Security Council Reforms from 2005 to 2006, and as India’s Ambassador to the Lao’s People’s Democratic Republic, from 1997 to 1999. In 1990-1991, he was a member of India’s first National Security Advisory Board..

In 2005, the Sri Lankan president conferred upon him the ‘Sri Lanka Ratna’, the country’s highest national honour for a foreigner. In 2014, he received the ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’ in South and Southeast Asian Studies from Sri Venkateswara University in Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh. Prof. Muni has authored and edited around 30 books and monographs, and published almost 250 articles and research papers in Indian and foreign magazines.
