Nepal’s Foreign Policy Strategies: Has Hedging Worked?

Speaker:
Raunak Mainali,
Research Fellow, Centre for Social Change, Nepal

Chair:

Professor, CPR

Friday, 17th January 2025, 4:00 PM IST

The talk will be held in a hybrid mode at the CPR Conference Room (Dharam Marg, New Delhi) and online via Zoom. Register below to attend.

About the talk:
Nepal has historically pursued a policy of hedging as a means to offset risks associated with economic dependence on India. These vulnerabilities were exposed in the 1989 and 2015 blockades and Nepal has attempted to forge closer ties with China. Viewing Nepal’s relations vis-a-vis India and China this talk will attempt to answer how Nepal has been hedging, but more importantly, if it is an effective and sustainable foreign policy approach.

About the speaker:
Raunak Mainali is a Research Fellow at the Centre for Social Change, Nepal. He has a degree in Politics and International Relations from the University of Kent and a Masters in Defence, Development, and Diplomacy from Durham University. His recent co-authored book, Nepal’s Peace Process, explores the 15-year peace process and its shortcomings following the Nepali Civil War.
