The Centre for Policy Research is hosting the seventh workshop of the International Social & Economic Rights Project (iSERP), a project of the Program on Human Rights in the Global Economy, School of Law, Northeastern University, USA. iSERP is a global consortium of judges, lawyers, human rights activists, and legal academics who study the effectiveness of constitutionally embedded social and economic rights (SER) in promoting real change in people’s lives. iSERP sponsors international gatherings on a nearly annual basis for information exchange and to promote research on practical, political, and legal questions related to SER enforcement. Previous meetings have occurred in Boston (USA), Bogotá (Colombia), Pretoria (South Africa), London (UK) and Bellagio (Italy). A collection of research outputs presented at conferences and other meetings was published in Helena Alviar García, Karl Klare, and Lucy A Williams, eds. Social and Economic Rights in Theory and Practice: Critical Inquiries, Routledge (2015).
The Delhi workshop is intended to (1) continue the research exchange and collaboration as at prior meetings, (2) develop new research priorities following on publication of the book, and (3) allow lawyers and scholars from around the world to immerse themselves in understanding and learning from the situation of SER advocacy and litigation in India and the South Asian region. This workshop will focus on rights to education, health, housing and land. In addition, it will interrogate questions with respect to the shrinking space for civil society and also large-scale displacement due to dam and infrastructure projects.
