IntroductionThe Summer Workshop on Strategic Studies aims to bring together a group of twenty students and analysts from the fields of international relations, military studies, political science and public policy. The Workshop will look closely at issues rooted in strategic and military policy, whilst equipping students with the necessary conceptual frameworks and methods of analysis to conduct advanced historical and theoretical research. The workshop also considers contemporary cases for investigation, and will allow students to interact with key policy makers and commentators. In the end, it hopes to create a network of individuals capable of analyzing strategic and military choices and to foster policy-relevant research and teaching on strategic issues. The Workshop will be held at Centre for Policy Research, NewDelhi, from 23 July to 3 August 2012.ScopeThe workshop will focus on the following themes and topics:• Nature and dimensions of power• Utility and limitations of force as an instrument of policy• Conventional and unconventional warfare• Nuclear weapons and strategy• Civil-Military relations and the use of force • Intelligence assessment and strategic decision-making• Methodological tools for strategic studies PlanEach day of the workshop will be divided into three sessions. The first will aim to engage in discussion drawing on given texts. These sessions will be conducted in a more informal seminar format, pushing students to reflect on the readings, but equally, challenge and question assumed and underlying principles in the broad area of strategic studies. In the second session, students will be lectured by established scholars in the field or practitioners. The last session might be considered a tutorial looking closely at methodological tools in strategic studies, including historical and qualitative methods, case studies and net assessment. In the second week, students will be expected to make a short presentation on a case study. Some sessions will also be used for screening and discussing movies that shed light on the themes covered in the curriculum. This is a reading intensive workshop. The students will be sent a pack of advance texts well before the workshop commences. This will be supplemented by additional readings and case studies during the course of the Summer School. InstructorsThe workshop will be coordinated by Srinath Raghavan, Centre for Policy Research, New Delhi and Rudra Chaudhuri, King’s College London.
