Talk on Potential and Limitations of Law as an Instrument of Social Reform

Date and Time

November 30, 2016

12:30 pm to

Location

Conference Hall, Centre for Policy Research

When it comes to social reform, we reflexively turn to legal recourse as a cure-all remedy –be it anti-sati law after Roop Kanwar case in Deorala, amendments to the dowry prohibition act of 1980’s, laws against domestic violence, the recent amendments in rape law, or proposed law against honour killings. But most of these laws have been drafted crudely and therefore tend to produce results contrary to those promised. The talk will critically examine the intersection of law, society and social reform.

Madhu Purnima Kishwar is Founder-Editor of Manushi, ‘a Journal about Women and Society,’ which pioneered people oriented journalism and made critical intellectual interventions in contemporary debates on diverse issues. She is also the founder president of Manushi Sangathan — a forum for informed activism whose interventions have led to far reaching policy and law reforms in different arenas in favour of disadvantaged groups.

A former Professor at the Centre for the Study of Developing Societies, Kishwar is now ICSSR Maulana Azad National Professor.
