This talk looked at how the waste economy and different forms of work relating to waste interact with each other. Waste management in Indian cities is a question not only of urban governance, i.e. of how and whether the solid waste is managed, but also of urban informality, i.e. the informal actors and institutions involved in waste management. This talk attempted to shed light on the process of waste management in an urban setting by focusing on the communities, places and institutions that enable us to build a grounded understanding of everyday negotiations and how communities build critical spatial imaginations.
Anant Maringanti is Executive Director of Hyderabad Urban Lab and a geographer with a PhD from University of Minnesota and has taught graduate courses at the National University of Singapore and University of Hyderabad. His research and teaching interests centre on questions of urbanization and globalization from the South Asian vantage point. He is currently the director of Hyderabad Urban Lab, a multi-disciplinary research programme run by the Right to the City Foundation. He is widely published in national and international academic journals on social movements, politics of development and urbanization.
CORP Seminar Series
The Community of Research and Practice (CORP) under the Scaling City Institution for India: Sanitation (SCI-FI: Sanitation) initiative aims to provide a platform for discussing the experiences of the researchers and practitioners on urban sanitation. The seminar series will help strengthen the understanding of the challenges and opportunities in urban sanitation by promoting evidence-based knowledge in the sector. The space seeks to initiate discussion by sharing experiences; lessons learned from successes and failures; alternative models of sanitation technologies and service delivery models; and studies of best practices. Through these discussions, the sanitation initiative intends to build a stronger evidence base for developing policies, programmes and implementation of plans for achieving sanitized cities.
