Scholarly debates on Caste range from the arguments of its decline to its reassertion. The ‘field’ provides us with enough data to support whatever view we tend to hold on the topic. The talk, based on the speaker’s extensive travels in Uttar Pradesh, will focus on how social, economic and political forces have come to define, dominate and reshape Caste in ways that deserve serious attention from scholars as well as policymakers.
