Workshop on Reservation for Minorities

Date and Time

September 17, 2012

4:30 am to 10:30 am

Location

The Ministry of Law and Justice, in collaboration with the Centre for Policy Research, organized a day-long workshop cum consultation on some of the key legal and policy challenges facing India’s affirmative action program with respect to minorities. These dilemmas and difficulties have become more urgent through a spate of recent judgments on sub-classification within OBCs, permissibility of minority sub-quota, standards of illustrating backwardness and so on and so forth. These judgments compel us to re-examine the constitutional and legal dimensions of extending reservations to backward minorities. It is this context which informs the workshop.

The idea was to explore the normative and empirical justifications underlying reservations for backward minorities and comprehensively debate its congruity with our constitutional commitments to equality, non-discrimination and social justice.
