Slums are not a new phenomenon. They have been concomitant to increasing urbanisation and industrialisation as populations boomed. These pockets of informal settlements are characterised by overcrowding, insanitary, unhealthy, and dehumanising living conditions, insecure land tenure, lack of access to basic civic services, education, and healthcare, among others.
