Dr Sonal Sharma joined CPR as a Visiting Fellow in 2026. He is currently an assistant professor of sociology at Tufts University and previously, he was a Research Associate at CPR.
Prior to joining CPR, he was involved in researching migration and industrial work in Delhi. He has a master’s degree in development studies from Dr B R Ambedkar University, New Delhi.
He is a sociologist specialising in labor, informality, and social reproduction, with a focus on how class, caste, race, and gender shape labor movements. His research critically examines paid domestic work, tracing its historical and political-economic transformations in India and South Africa. Through a comparative lens, he explores how domestic workers mobilise for labor rights, the role of the state in shaping their working conditions, and the influence of trade unions and NGOs on their struggles.
