Housing is well understood as an indicator of economic prosperity with a magnified impact on GDP owing to its inter-linkages with multiple sectors. It is equally a measure and predictor of human development, with potential multiplier effects on health, educational, social status and economic well-being. Moreover, housing – embedded as it is in how people live, work and dream – is a natural entry point to study spatial and economic transformations in society.

Against this backdrop, the India Housing Report has been envisaged as an online archive and periodic report that brings together the rich but disparate analytical work on housing in India, and explores new directions to study its complexities, intersections and novelties. The report is envisaged as a periodic document with extensive supporting information that will report on the state of housing in India to policymakers, those in the sector and the broader public. The first phase of this project has been funded by the H. T. Parekh Foundation, a Section 25 company established by the Housing Development Finance Corporation (HDFC) in order to conduct its corporate social responsibility activities.
